Hello Rummy Fans!

When we think about Turkey, things like turbans, baths, kebabs and sweets come in mind. But another thing Turkey is famous for is Okey, the Turkish variation of Rummy. If you haven’t tried it on our platform, we highly recommend giving this interesting variation a try on our Fun Mode tables or with our special Training Mode option.

Turkish Rummy is locally called Okey (pronounced O-kay). In Turkey it is played with small ivory tiles. A standard set of tiles comes with two blank ones, similar to the standard deck of cards that comes equipped with 2 Jokers.

During the game, the blank tiles replace a normal pair (e.g. the two red 5’s, the two blue 8’s) who in their turn use as the round’s wildcard. This is the Turkish way to prevent cheating and marked cards. Here at RummyRoyal we tried to create an adaptation that will include this special feature even though an online platform doesn’t have this risk. This makes the game a little confusing at first (especially for experienced Kalooki players who are used to “their” jokers), but once you get used to the minor differences, Turk Rummy becomes a highly enjoyable, strategy-centered game that’s recommended to the most patient and attentive players. Why? We’ll tell you why.

First, you can only lay off your cards when all of them are organized in runs and sets in your hand. To prevent unjustified penalties as a result of poor draws, the cards in your hand do not carry a point penalty, and the games always end with a -10, -20 or -40 score, depending on the type of win.

This will require you to pay even more attention to your opponents’ discarded and desired tiles, as your opponents will only lay down when they finish collecting tiles. It will also keep the suspense high until the final play.

Second, Turk Rummy isn’t just about runs and sets - it also allows winning with 7 identical pairs (e.g. 2 red 6’s, 2 black 12’s, 2 yellow 3’s and so on and so forth). This is very important to keep in mind when you try to figure out what your opponent needs in order to win.

Third, Turk Rummy has stalemate. When the pile runs out of tiles, the round ends and both players are penalized for their lack of ability to lay down. So patience is important, but too much patience will cost you precious penalty points.
